In any event...

Our man Tim over at Infinite Regress ran the 3rd annual Collective Mixtape project toward the end of 2009. In a nutshell he asks people to do covers of songs released that calendar year. I had done this in the past, and always look forward to the project as forced excuse to work on some music.

This year I chose to cover "You're so far around the bend" by Brooklyn favorites The National. The track appeared on the Dark was the Night compilation (regular readers know we are oh so fond of that album here at Stupidfresh.)

Without further ado have a listen to my version, which couldn't have been done without the wonders of Garage Band.

So Far Around the Bend (The National) - lippy

Treat your self to a trip over to Infinite Regress and take in the other submissions, which are all great for different reasons.

Highs in the low 70s

Today’s forecast is funk & soul! This morning he shared the raw tracks that make up one of these songs, "Trust Me" so people could remix it.

Below is my take on this song (which was pretty darn good before I ever got a chance to slice it up).

The Streets - Trust Me (Lippy Edit)

He's been sharing some remixes back onto his Twitter feed - maybe this one will get a mention. Preferably the song would be from the last year of music (a guideline I totally missed in the 2007 mixtape when I covered a Yaz track from 1982!)

Tim collects all of the cover songs people submit, and begins posting them day by day for listening and commenting.

Once it's all finished up he burns them all to CDs with killer original cover art and sends them out to participants, friends and loved ones.

For me, it's a great excuse to be creative and make something for the sake of making something. What a country!

This year I decided to stay in this century and had a go with "Ready for the Floor" originally by Hot Chip. You can check the post on Infinite Regress with more description.

Here is the cover itself for your listening pleasure.

Ready For the Floor (Cover) - Lippy

I highly recommend keeping up with the daily posts on IR - they are sure to be varied, inspirational and good ol' fashioned fun.

groovetime

Well here's a little ditty just for you ! I used to work with a guy named Hakim - he's one of those people you hope you have the pleasure of being around when you're on the j-o-b. Hakim would sing his way through the workday, and would often make up songs about things that happened and the people he interacted with.

The thing is - the dude has chops. Sure, I know you have some dude at your job that does the same thing, but they don't sound as good as Hakim.

Before moving on to a new gig, we recorded a bunch of acapella tracks to have on hand. I now present the first of what I hope are many Hakim's Moods remixes. I know isn't my normal "style" of music to make, but whatever. It sounds right, and I like trying new things. Let's go hang gliding together sometime.

Lippy (ft. This is an idea for an opening track to a concept album I've been thinking about. With this song, I wanted to create the sensation of what it feels like to be alone and closed off, but still wanting to open up to let someone else into your life. How there is beauty in that solitude, but also a sadness. It's not really trying to convey an inspirational feeling - more of an attempt to capture the feeling in it's natural state.
I like the string sections on here - it creates a movie score feel which goes along with the fact that the album will in essence be telling a story. This track will set the timbre for the album, but also allow for later contrast against it as the other songs will be more upbeat to a degree.
The Space Between

That's Boosh

A full-on honest to goodness kick-ass take no prisoners RAP song by the Bus Stop (Ranztron and Lippy). This nugget is an homage to the records put out by the Memphix label. Dark, sultry loops that are mysterious but still head nodding.

To Seek a New Home

Scenes From an F-Train

Probably the best track from the Stupidfresh album.
